  1. Why just the Tories? The labour party hands out the rewards to their friends just the same - it's public sector jobs that they dole out to their mates far more effectively than the Tories.

  2. I think Richard might eventually come round to my cynical view :-) Politicians are bad in the UK because they are self-serving, just like the monarchs and aristocracy of old. Henry VIII didn't improve the nation for the many! Politicians shape governance for their 'dopamine hit' because they can. Executive ministers with fairy-tale titles who maintain their own freedom to constrain us is not and has never been a useful profession - they are just playing an expensive game. I suspect that Richard still believes their job is to make life 'fair' which is equally absurd - the most prosperous and happy nations are those which constrain their politicians the most (ie Democracy) - Switzerland. The reason politicians seem worse now is (probably) because the scope for interference by the big state increases with wealth and technology and we hear more details because of modern media - they were just as useless in the past.

  3. People are differently motivated - the specific mechanism is not critical - even if they all psychopaths the argument would be much the same - pointless politicians.

  4. Yes - and they have kept it that way by blocking democratic reform. In the UK the last shift of power away from the ruling class was a century ago with universal suffrage - and we still don't have a free choice of representative with those votes!
