The biggest problem human society faces is authoritarianism. People who wish to rule other people. This has cost millions of lives and limited happiness & prosperity for all in the service of leaders and their delusions. If you believe that tiny special interest groups can best manage the infinite complexity of the economy, viruses, the climate etc then you are the real danger.

@fredfredrickson5436 - accountable governance would arise fom democratic process - the people authorising their temporary managers. In the UK, at least, the electoral system has been imposed by generations of self-selecting politicians. They choose the 'supreme leader', they decide who will appear in your list of candidates, they choose how long they will rule and the scope of their own powers (sovereign parliament), their own pay etc etc. This is all just aristocracy in reality or authoritarianism in general terms. In the UK our biggest fundamental problem is a tiny clique screwing around with everybody's freedom. The laissez-faire wonderland would start with the premise that the people are free and will define what they want their managers to manage.

@fredfredrickson5436 - It's irrelevent who lurks in the shadows - they will always try and game whatever system the wannabe rulers devise (The rich are a net benefit to us all BTW). We do not have a functioning democracy because our politicans believe in their right-to-rule - they are the authoritarians who currently change the constitution on a whim (Voting for 16 yr olds is none of their business) and even when (foolishly) asking us a constitutional question then fight tooth-and-nail to try and reverse our choice. The movement toward democracy was curtailed a century ago by those who knew they could get away with a wider franchise just for presentational effect. My guess is we are many decades behind in the service of these egotistic fools.
