I agree. Add to that some neutral countries, like Ireland and Austria, who have no taste for an European army, a strong pacifist movement who has no taste for any army at all and, the most importantly.. no clear European policy. Until European Parliament and European Comission, or some equivalents, are fully in charge of European foreign policy, military power is useless as it is only a tool. We can agree together on some common goals, but nothing that cannot be covered with treaties and national armies for the moment.

@Έκπληξηρυσός I fully agree. I don't think that people in the EU are ready for a federation, the "United states of Europe", yet. It will probably take a long time for that. In the meantime, speaking of an European army can be considered as a distant goal, but we have other fish to fry... like what France and Greece are doing at the moment to counter Turkey's threat, with the help of many other of our European friends.🙂

@77kromah I agree. The Only way I see is to build an ad hoc European force, composed from national armies, for limited, but agreed upon, missions. The best example is the recent proposition for a 5000 men strong european force who could have covered retreat of Europeans from Afghanistan. We had to rely on US forces to cover the operation, every European country sending a limited number of transport aircrafts and men. If the US were not there, our people would still be in Afghanistan. If we could build a force composed of predetermined national armies forces, give some power to the European presidency to commit it and negotiate for us, without having to ask to every European country first, for a well defined, limited number of predetermined missions, iit could be the core for an European force. We could later add missions, commit larger forces, give more power to the EU presidency.
