Events in Georgia, Moldova, Belarus, the war between Azerbaïdjan and Armenia he could not prevent were evidence he could not control this empire. Ukraine independence was the nail in the coffin. Putin so resorted to the only way he knows to settle things : violence. Coercing Ukraine into submission would demonstrate the might of Russia to the world, more than any hypersonic wunderwaffe or Lavrov visit to some junta leaders in Africa. And show puppet countries what was awaiting them if they tried to rebel.
