That's not what many F-35 customers think. It is the backbone of many air forces around the world, a multirole aircraft that is supposed to fill the air superiority role among others.

@Echo4Sierra4160 that does not address what i said: the F-35 is supposed to fill the air superiority role, as it is the only aircraft many air forces have. Most air forces dont have any F-22 that it can direct bandits to.

@scottwhitley3392 'most'? Only the UK use the F-35 and the EF. For many european countries ( switzerland, finland, belgium, Netherlands...) the F-35 is the only fighter. Edit: i forgot that italy also uses both. That does not change my point. You can add norway and poland to the list of those who have no EF.

@CrazyNikel the F-35 is a multirole fighter. That include air superiority missions.

@anthonysaponaro6318 i don't think any country will give up on air superiority missions just because they are part of coalitions. Just as an example, Canada is considering the F-35 to replace its aging F-18 fleet. The country is part of several coalitions, one being NORAD, for which they are supposed to defend against any airborne threats Second example is Switzerland. As a neutral country, it is not part of any coalition and their F-35 are supposed to protect their air space.
