  2. I suspect this fund is mostly gone… Otherwise, the ruble would not have to be blocked around 107 for a dollar, nor interest rates increased to that high level. The Central Bank is not willing to spend the fund to sustain the ruble, even if the volume of exchange is low. They have decided they would not use the ruble to obtain foreign currencies until the end of the year, to reduce the strain and cut the currency from any international connection. Probably because they ran out of funds.

  3. With 19, soon 20% interest rate, nobody can invest in new factories or modernize existing ones. It is unlikely that productivity will improve or more domestic goods will be available without investments…

  4.  @johnm2879  there is so much you can do with what you have. Specially when high interest rates are coupled with the lack of workers. And high inflation does not help either. Domestic market will decline with no hope to modernize it. Not surprising, This is a war economy, after all.

  7. Add to that that the Empire was shaking : Moldova, Georgia were looking for freedom. And the Azerbaïdjan/armenia war demonstrated that Russia was too weak to keep the peace between its puppet states. Putin knew the Empire was crumbling and it was just a matter of time before states turn to the West. He had nothing to offer, only corruption, poverty and alcohol. His only way to counter the fall was brute force. The mighty Russian army he thought could crush any revolt.

  8. It’s president Zelenski and Ukrainian government who decided to stop the négociations, as far as we know. Whatever Johnson, Biden, Zelenski’s driver, bodyguard, or his baker may have said to him is irrelevant. He took his decision based on what he knew at the time. And whoever told him not to sign had convincing arguments. Zelenski,is not a muppet.

  10. The Russians published on last week a list of French volunteers supposedly killed in a missile strike. At least 4 of them are alive and well, and none of French contacted reports having lost a friend. Russian propaganda published that the day after President Macron announced France will supply more missiles and ammunition, but they did not try to make their claim believable. They target the audience that does not go deep into news. Medias around the world announced that 65 POWs were killed, they have hit their target. They don’t care if it is confirmed afterward that no POW was onboard. The semblance of plausibility is enough as far as the media, in Russia, or preferably in the world, reports the news. And it is true for every Russian claim. They want people to feel that Russia is winning, will win this war, or at least doubt.
