  2. Add to that that the Empire was shaking : Moldova, Georgia were looking for freedom. And the Azerbaïdjan/armenia war demonstrated that Russia was too weak to keep the peace between its puppet states. Putin knew the Empire was crumbling and it was just a matter of time before states turn to the West. He had nothing to offer, only corruption, poverty and alcohol. His only way to counter the fall was brute force. The mighty Russian army he thought could crush any revolt.
