There is no EU « trade war » against Chinese ICEs, HEVs and PHEVs. In fact the EU is more open to Chinese cars than China to European cars (try to import a European car in China…) There are specific tariffs on EVs because some companies were subsidized by the Chinese state, which is against international trading agreements.

@bldomain Teslas sold in the EU are either made in China or Germany. extra tariffs on Teslas made in China is 7.8%. So Tesla is hit too. And extra tariffs varies between manufacturers, based on how they cooperated with EU authorities.
4
@boxtears EU tariffs are 10%, except for EVs were there are extra duties, that vary depending on the manufacturer. Chinese tariffs on imports are currently 15%.

Stellantis made huge profits last year, something like €18,6 billions (!) The thing is, in the US, there is a lot to do : design and launch new models. The company is restructuring all brands all over the world.

Too big for Europe. There is a market, for sure, but rather small.

And US customers will pay for the investment and extra labor costs. That’s an idea!

Thé G6 is priced around 43 to 53000€ here in France. That’s comparable to the TM3/Y Costs are higher for several reasons : tariffs, of course, VAT, but also service (XPeng has to build a network and a supply chain from scratch), higher wages and, probably, marketing reasons.

@shiulai5804 your opinion.

@sed9406 tariffs on imported cars is 15% in China. They were contemplating increasing it on large displacement engine cars.

@Seeker2324 what are you trying to say? Europe is also full of cars imported from foreign countries, Japan, China, Korea… despite tariffs. And the Chinese love German cars and some are rich enough to afford imported cars. It is the same for luxury goods from France. The others are mainly built in China, though.
1
@Seeker2324 except for premium cars, very few cars are imported in China. Add 15% tariff on a car, freight costs, the fact cars are cheaper in China, and the margin is gone. Most manufacturers build car in China.

@vasil7410 10% is ‘huge tariffs’? Come on!

And you walk, for the moment? Buy new shoes : you’ll need them until the car is ready 😊

Renault is an EV manufacturer for many years and have, or will have in the next few months, a full EV range. That cannot be said for Toyota, for example. So, what are you talking about?
1
I wish for the people living there it happens, but the cars are very different and the factory would require a complete overhaul. Same price than building a new factory in some EU country with lower wages.

@changeofseason8054 Canada or Mexico NEVER put 25% on US made cars. That is not a retaliation from Trump, it is an attack.

Stellantis will not give up on EVs. They will sell ICE cars in the US, with minimal investments (no R&D) and design new EVs for the rest of the world, where there are still a thing. They already have parts in Leapmotor, so the even can design cars and build them in China. If EVs make a come back in the US, they will be prepared for it.

Renault is not struggling, at least no more than other car companies. Mitsubishi is part of the Alliance and has nothing to do with Nissan demise. Nissan broke up from Renault years ago : their strategy is not defined by Renault for years. It is their own fault. Without Renault, Nissan would have disappeared in the 1990s

There are more rare metals in an ICE than in a Renault EV.

@ there are German cars, for that. Or vans. And it is a small market.

Thé « normal » way to change tariffs is to talk to the other country and try to find an agreement. That’s the way to do business. For example, There are free trade agreement between the EU and Japan and South Korea, two major manufacturers. There are no tariffs on imported cars anymore. On both sides. When did Trump called the eu, asking for a new agreement on tariffs? He did not. If he puts tariffs unilaterally on cars, there will be retaliations on some other goods or services. And it will be bad for both the US and the EU. And tariff on Chinese cars is also 10%. Higher on EVs, because China subsidized illegally their manufacturers.
