@eLKy 15 that's an USAF airbase with US aircrafts, support is from the USA. If Germany was to buy some F-15, they would want to maintain them themselves, with a proper maintenance site, without having to ship back stuff to the US for repair.
1
@michaelkeller5008 No, sorry for the misunderstanding, I was refering to the 2012 test in Switzerland.
1
That is one of the points: why favour US suppliers in Europe while they are competitors to our industry? Airbus does not want German government to fund Boeing, for evident reasons.
1
Keep in mind also the competition between Boeing and Airbus. Germany has no interest in funding a competitor of an European company. Specially after the KC-46 blow.

Germany is working with France on the SCAF, next generation fighter.
1
@tortugabob Germany is looking for a replacement for the aging Tornado, not AI warfare. This AI will be developed for the SCAF. Using US tech is pointless, as an indigenous design is prefered. And the NGAD is not even a thing yet, it is just a demonstrator. It will take years before the first ones are delivered.with limited capabilities as it is the usually the case. Fitting an AI warfare on an F-18, an aircraft at the end of its development life, based on an old airframe designed in the 60s/70s, is also pointless. I don't think the US will ever consider that option. Germany best choices would be either the Super Hornet, as it is today. It fits the bill, though it clearly has limited room for future improvements. Or the Eurofighter with a costly ECR version to be designed.
1
@m1a1abramstank49 I don't know the figures, but, at first glance, it made sense to use existing aircrafts, that had a lot of potential and were already paid for, to do the job, rather than dispose of them and buy new ones. Now, again, i don't know anything about the cost of the various options.
1
@jimc1654 i see your point.
1
Germans don't necessarily want a "5th gen fighter", whatever that is, they are looking for a replacement of an outdated fighter.
1
No. The Eurofighter would be a better option: if an ECR version needs to be designed, the EF is a better airframe, more advanced and made in Germany.
1
@timonsolus compared to the F-15 and F/A-18, no. Both aircrafts are older than the EF, designed at a time when stealth and supercruise were not a thing, for example.
1
@timonsolus well, i don't think the designers of the EF would agree with you. Industrial intelligence is very important for every company. It is not because you sell an equivalent product that you are not interrested in how your competitors do the thing. You can still learn something from a competitor, and knowing the strengths and limitations of their product is paramount.
1
that's unlikely. MIG-17, if better than MIG-15 at transsonic speeds, was not designed for supersonic. It would have been uncontrollable.
1
??? Which aircrafts are more advanced?
1
Nene, as you say it Bismark, is french slang for, well... Sabrina most prominent feature. No wonder I ve always love the look of this aircraft. 🙂😍
1
I though the F-35 was already compatible with the B61 nuclear bomb?
1
Thé drawback with the A 10 is that gun : why carry such a big, heavy gun on the battlefield? It reduces payload, is not good enough against hardened targets and too powerful against soft ones. Replacing it with a lighter, more conventional one, would mean basically redesigning the aircraft, as the weight distribution would need to be extensively revised. The only advantage of the A 10 is that it does exist and is mastered.
1
Did you watch the video? Germany is working with France on the SCAF, Tempest direct competitor.
1
@gusgone4527 The budget for the demonstrator was signed on... yesterday. But, who knows, you may be right. Or the Tempest project will be dropped in favor of a cooperation on the future US fighter. Or some other thing. Time will tell.
1
Concentrating all stresses in a single "cage" allowed to make the Bf109 lighter: there was a "cage" around the pilot where everything was attached: gear, engine, wings...
1
@fatdoi003 Germany is part of NATO, other countries fly Rafale, F-35, Mirage, JAS... furthermore, not all Eurofighters are the same. if one can't do one job, another one will take over.
1
Grippen, Eurofighter, Rafale...
1
No ECM in France. Germany, France and Spain are working together on the FCAS 6th gen fighter. It would be helpful if Germany could design an ECM suite for the EF, to be reused on the FCAS.
1
Not an option: rafale does not fit the requirements.
1
They do: the first tornado with life extension was delivered on last month, I think. Life is extended from 6000 to 8000h. Tornados will be retired in 2030. There will be a gap there before the FCAS can take over. Hence why Germany is looking for a replacement.
