@JL-tm3rc a barrel is much, much more complex than that to manufacture. It is made of several « tubes »(a core and a jacket ) of special pressed steel that are mated together with cold and heat, bored out, treated. We don’t know how many Russia can build, but it cannot be made through any basic workshop.

@JL-tm3rc source for thé solid piece of metal? To my knowledge, no gun is made of a solid piece of metal for at least 2 centuries.

@luipaardprint gun barrels are made from « tubes » that are mated together : a core and a jacket. The core is put in tension by the jacket during manufacturing to compensate partly for the pressure of the explosion. The core is then bored to obtain the riffling and treated to improve its wear resistance. This process involves a lot of know how, special steels and machinery.

@JL-tm3rc since the fall of the USSR, Russian factories struggled to survive, because of a lack of money. And a large part of it was in Ukraine. Manufacturing shells is relatively straightforward, but manufacturing gun barrels requires special tooling that may have been scrapped or sold during those times.

@JL-tm3rc there are only two factories capable of manufacturing barrels. We don’t know how many barrels there are manufacturing. They need 500 for every 1 million shells, assuming a lifetime of a barrel is 2000 rounds. On the western side, several companies in Europe, USA, South Korea can manufacture barrels. Nexter has already ramped up production. And Ukraine does not need as much artillery pieces than Russia.

@JL-tm3rc for thé EU alone, it was planned to manufacture 1 million shells per year on this year, 1.7 millions in 2025. US were planning 100000 per month (1,2 millions per year) 155mm rounds for this summer, according to Defense One.

@JL-tm3rc you don’t understand : the Soviet built up stocks on several decades, during peacetime. Their factories were setup to supply and equip a large army in peacetime. Even if Russian industry is intact, we don’t know if they can cover the needs in wartime, where barrels wear out quickly.

@Br1cht i assume 2000 rounds because it is what is commonly accepted. If you have more accurate figures, share them. Now, it is possible to use a gun after 2000 rounds, if accuracy and safety are not an issue. But a gun that cannot reach its assigned target is a waste of shells and ressources.

@u2beuser714 of course, it can be done! We manufacture guns for two centuries, so it is something that is well known. Now, it needs special tooling, forging, special steels and some knowledge. You cannot manufacture thousands of barrels tomorrow simply by switching workshop manufacturing frying pans to barrels.

@JL-tm3rc sure, lol! And you believe your crap? If you know how to make « 10 barrels a day », I am sure many, many companies, in Russia and elsewhere, will be interested. You are rich!😂
