Not many people know this, but on July 28, 1945 a B-25 Mitchell bomber crashed into the Empire State Building because of fog. 14 people died and the damage was $1 million in 1945 dollars but the building wasn't affected otherwise. Also something amazing occurred. Elevator operator Betty Lou Oliver was thrown from her elevator car on the 80th floor and suffered severe burns. First aid workers placed her on another elevator car to transport her to the ground floor, but the cables supporting that elevator had been damaged in the incident, and it fell 75 stories, ending up in the basement. Oliver survived the fall due to the softening cushion of air created by the falling elevator car within this elevator shaft, however she suffered a broken pelvis, back and neck when rescuers found her amongst the rubble. This remains the world record for the longest survived elevator fall. - Wiki

  3. Thanks for another fascinating video. Another mysterious radio signal are those Driftnet Radio Buoys (DRB) which transmit 3 letter Morse Code used by fishing boats operating in open seas and oceans for collecting fishing nets. These are low power and operate between 1600 khz and up to 4.000 Mhz including thr 160 meter band. On a good night they can be heard for hundreds or even thousands of miles.

  4. Those directional array MF (AM) antennas are very common here in the U.S....While stations here have to protect other stations on the same frequency. Some stations use directional antennas on purpose to concentrate their signals into a city or a large metropolitan area. A lot of New York City AM stations actually have transmitters and antennas over in New Jersey and they use directional arrays to concentrate their signal east into New York City.

  5. Many years ago in the early to mid 1990's, Brother Stair had a ton of interesting guests on his broadcast from the patriot and conspiracy community. Including Linda Thompson, Anthony J Hilder, Mark from Michigan, Jeff Baker, Jim Keith, Terry Cook and even William Cooper (who would go on to broadcast his own show "The Hour Of The Time" on shortwave and satellite). If you thought Art Bell and his UFO stuff was interesting listening, you should have heard what was on Stair's broadcasts in the 1990's with his guests! I first ran across his shortwave broadcasts in 1993 on WRNO shortwave, transmitter was from New Orleans. A bit later I found WWCR. Now whether or not you believed Stair (or his guests). He was interesting to hear. In fact, in the 1990's in the U.S. there was all types of conspiracy related programming from many other broadcasters other than Stair that made for most compelling listening throughout the shortwave dial.

  9. I'm sorry to see that they shut off the AM service over there. I was was a bit surprised that they put out 200,000 watts. Here in the U.S., AM stations are limited to 50,000 watts with many stations running far less than that. On the other hand, it may open the doors for some AM DXing possibilities for you. It may come of a bit surprise to some , but a few stations from the U.S. and Canada do make it across the pond. Including the 50,000 watt New York City stations such as 710 WOR, 1010 WINS, and 1130 WBBR as they beam their signals east. Check out the many Transatlantic AM DXing videos out there on YouTube,.   11. That was really interesting. Here in the states the FCC gutted their monitoring stations years ago, I guess to save money. Years ago the FCC used to take ham radio violations very seriously and amateur radio operators were always on their toes not to mess up. These days, they don't really seem to care as evidenced on the ongoing nonsense on some of the ham radio bands.

  14. There was a 2,063 foot tower in North Dakota, for awhile it was the tallest tower in the world. After the FCC did the digital repack, it was shortened to 1,987 feet. It is called the KVLY-TV mast located near Blanchard North Dakota, halfway between Fargo and Grand Forks.

  15. All our TV here in the states was supported entirely by advertising with the exception of PBS which was mainly supported by viewer donations. Beyond that, any commercial free TV that was available was on cable TV like HBO which we had to pay extra for.

  17. Interesting. I have never heard about those "Nokia" super long range phones until now. Maybe they were only available in the Middle East. But even then, I thought the aircraft band was an world-wide allocation (including the Middle East). Now I have heard about illegal extended range cordless phones(here in the U.S.). I think I might have seen ads for them in electronic hobbyist magazines in the 80's and 90's. Those ran several watts and usually at the end of the AM broadcast band and/or around 46/49 Mhz.

  19. Here across the pond.. You had to be 18 or over to get a CB license. CB licenses cost $20 in the early 1970's dropping later to $4 and by 1977, the licenses were given out for free. By 1982 our FCC threw in the towel and stopped requiring licenses for CB altogether. After decades of AM/SSB , the FCC finally approved FM for CB radio in October 2021.

  21. Interesting to hear about the U.K. CB scene back in the day. As you might suspect, CB was huge here in the states in the late 70's and into the early 80's. Seems there were CB shops and stores springing up in every town and CB magazines like S9 were popular. We had CB meet ups at the local parks. CB got so big that the FCC threw their hands up and stopped requiring licensing on April 28 1983. Yes, CB radio was our social media at the time even though no one used the term social media back then. There has been some developments here across the pond. Word has that the FCC finally approved FM on the CB band here in the states and in 2017 the FCC finally threw out the 'no skip rule' that said you couldn't talk to another CB-er more than 155 miles away. Not that anyone really followed the 'no skip rule' on CB radio anyway. Interesting topic, cheers

  23. My only experience with pirate radio in New York was me listening to the legendary WHOT 91.5 out of Brooklyn NY circa 1989 from some 20 to 25 miles miles away with a directional FM antenna.. Hank Hayes and Jim Nazium were the main DJ's with Tommy Edison sometimes on the air too. They had a deep echo, played a LOT of custom jingles . Their format was mainly oldies and some current tunes like Veronica by Elvis Costello, Angel of Harlem by U2 and of course I won't back down by Tom Petty. They'd operate every weekend when the licensed local station WNYE would go off the air and WHOT would take over the frequency. Hank and Jim ran a great station and they were very entertaining and often very funny too. I know there were other Brooklyn pirates at the time. But WHOT "Ninety one and a half" was the one I listened to. They were a great station with a very talented staff. I think Hank is broadcast engineer now, not sure what Jim and Tommy are doing these days. Thanks for covering the NY pirates...This brings back memories of WHOT from long ago.

  25. I understand some industrial machines only run on older operating systems like Windows NT 3.5 or 4.0 because the manufacturer never updated their software on that particular machine. They'd rather you buy a completely new machine to get newer software to run on it. When new machines cost anywhere from $250,000 and up, and the older machines still work perfectly. It doesn't make sense to replace it. I still use Windows XP Pro to make MP3 CD's for my pickup truck using an old version of Nero.

  26. I'm from the states and these stories are new even to me. By the way, Interstate -71 in Ohio runs from Cincinnati through Columbus (the Capitol of Ohio) and continues to Cleveland. It runs southwest to northeast.

  27. There is a video of the original World Trade Center observation deck where they show all the antennas and you can hear a buzz in the video from the all the RF power. I forget the exact name of the video, but it's on YouTube. I think the video was probably taken by a tourist.

  28. Here in the states, CB got so big that nearly every town had a CB store by the mid to late 1970's. CB's were also sold by Radio Shack, Department Stores, Appliance Stores, Truck Stops and even Drug Stores. CB went to 40 channels in 1977 and later that year, the licenses became free. April 28 1983, the FCC dropped licensing requirements for CB. Some sixty-four years after the introduction of CB radio in 1958, our FCC finally approved FM for CB radio in 2021.

  36. Fascinating subject. I wasn't aware of the Times Square antenna tower. Before 9/11 the FM and TV stations used to transmit from both the World Trade Center, and the Empire State Building. Regarding WBGO 88.3 they used to or maybe still do mainly transmit from one of the tall insurance buildings in downtown Newark. The last time I heard them, they were an all jazz station.

I didn't realize there was so much pirate activity in the U.K. If the powers that be actually put on the air a decent radio station that the people wanted, chances are there would be less pirates on the air. One of the famous pirates here in the U.S. was the legendary WHOT 91.5 in Brooklyn, New York Circa 1989
