  1. I remember when just about everyone in the neighborhood worked on their cars. They did oil changes, spark plug changes, fixed the brakes. There was a guy up the street that repaired shoes. Around the block, there was a place where you could have your knives, scissors and hedge clippers sharpened while you waited. Half way up the street there was a machine shop. There were three embroidery shops within 15 minutes of each other. The hardware store and even the pharmacy had tube testers so you could test you the tubes on your radio or TV. There was a TV repair shop 20 minutes away by foot. There were three bakeries all within a 20 minute walk. Some guy used to sell fresh vegetables out of his truck. All that is gone
