The other side of the coin: 1) Producing 1 kg of sugarcane requires 7000 ltrs of water. 2) The sugarcane 'mafia' is politically pretty powerful that it makes sure most of the irrigated water comes for sugarcane production and this has let to shortage of water in other regions (especially in the state of Maharastra) leading to farmer suicides. 3) India produces 25% more sugar than it consumes 4) But the extra 25% can't be exported cause the production isn't cost effective when compared to countries like Brazil. 5) Indian govt. then has to pay a subsidy on the extra sugar produced to make it's price low enough to be 'exportable'. Indian govt. is trying to solve this problem and the 'stubble burning' problem by promoting ethanol as a blended part of fuels used in automobiles. Kudos to companies like Yash Pakka who are trying to help the environment by using bagasse to make biodegradable use-and-throw utensils. But the real question is, should so much of sugarcane be produced in the first place? and how much bagasse does India need to replace all plastic products? And what if India doesn't produce enough bagasse to replace plastic, what then??
