"I don't know about the controversy, but I can imagine it must be from Hindu fundamentalists." - This is a masterclass on how morons form opinion. Stop assuming and imagining and start reading. This is an infight within the Ambedkarite Buddhist Dalit Community. A Dalit director made content using stories allegedly from this Dalit writer's book withput giving her credit. She was upset and took the the twitter like activists instinctively do. She was attacked by her own community for making this an issue and not seeing the larger picture.

These are Ambedkarites. Ambedkar came up with his own understanding of Buddhism, separate from the three main streams, and then converted to Buddhism. Many from dalit communities got converted to Buddhism. They have come up with their own rituals etc. The entire idea is to not be a "Hindu" cause they associate the caste system with Hinduism, which is controlled by the Brahmins. That's the reason you found the wedding you saw being represented wrong. This is a part of a deep ideological game not easy to understand for the uninitiated.
