  1. An accidental nuclear explosion has never happened. One big reason are the safety systems built into the warheads. Most modern "boosted" nuclear warheads need a puff of tritium&deuterium in the core to get started, and they definitely need a neutron generator. Bombs have been dropped, burned, lost at sea, and so forth, but the safety systems have worked. Given ~~ 20,000 warheads, that's extraordinary performance. Eric Schlosser knows this. -- Dave
