  2. @patricksweeney5132 There is no independence in Puerto Rico. It’s a completely colonial situation. Currently the Governing Body of the Island is a Fiscal Control Board appointed by Congress in 2016. The Committee on Natural Resources is the appointed body of Congress that has full control of the Island.

  3.  @floriandc5695  Exactly. For example if there is a shipment of oil coming from Saudi, it has to make it to a US port, then transferred to a US flagged container ship, then transported to one of the non-Continental States and territories. The added costs are monumental.

  4.  @floriandc5695  Puerto Rico has the same “tariffs” as Hawaii and Alaska due to the Jones Act. That’s why prices are higher. Not tariffs, but costs of being prohibited to use any other shipping than US flagged ships.
