US Constitution does not allow these non-incorporated territories to vote to decide their future. Power to change any political status on any of these territories resides entirely on Congress. This was decided in US Supreme Court in 1903, and has not changed since.

mike chad dicic No...they can’t vote on their status. It’s more like a survey. Only Congress can make them state, country or cede them.

You are absolutely correct BuddyL. That’s why the matters of the management of these territories resides in the hands of the Committee on Natural Resources in Congress. A sub-sub-sub committee

Marlon Moncrieffe No Marlon.....their votes are meaningless to Congress and the Constitution . It clearly states that only Congress can decide their political status. Not the people.

And Taxes have nothing to do with their cases. That’s just a line used by the misinformed . Before the IRS was created, we had 33 states in existence....none were paying federal taxes. Irs was created as a temporary measure to fund the civil war. Somehow it still exists.

For those uninformed and like to repeat the “they don’t pay taxes” line. Taxes have nothing to do with the unincorporated territory cases. That’s just a very lazy line used by the misinformed . Before the IRS was created, we had 33 states in existence....none were paying federal taxes. Irs was created as a temporary measure to fund the civil war. Somehow it still exists.

jlhabitan50 100% agree. I live in a base that has a display of 2 bells...for no apparent reason. Nobody pays attention to them. One day I see Duterte in the news saying that he was going to ask Trump to return some bells to the Philippines. I did a quick lookup...it’s the freaking bells 2 minutes away from where I live....lol

@aseanidmiller1238 IT does. Taxes not the issue of the colonial status.

jlhabitan50 If you are referring to Hawaii and Alaska, the statement is incorrect . Those 2 were never in the colonial status of “Unincorporated territory”. Alaska was purchased from Russia and immediately “incorporated” into the US. Hawaii we did a coup and also “incorporated “ the islands. In the Constitution , “incorporated “ means that path to statehood is guaranteed . Unincorporated means that Congress decides, if ever, the outcome. This happened because of the Phillippines. As a US colony, Congress started discussing statehood. But obviously, having a brown people State was inconceivable and they created the term “Unincorporated territory” to differentiate those that would never become part of the Union. This was decided by the Supreme Court in 1903....The Insular Cases.

@mikeaskme3530 Mike...i was agreeing with the events....not the sale. My 8 year old knows it was new colonies acquired from the war.

@mikeaskme3530 The Philippines was the only one that was purchased for $20M. Cuba and Puerto Rico were invaded by the USA. Cuba gained independence....Puerto Rico still a Colony....the oldest Colony in the world.
