I retired from a teaching job that I held for 30 years. I never worked less than 50 hours a week, and 60 hours a week was not uncommon. Yeah, yeah, yeah "I had summers off" but not really. I spent most of my summer "vacation" attending conferences at my expense to keep my teaching licenses or else working on lesson prep for the coming school year. Let me tell you, 50-60 hour weeks, year after year, takes a toll on your mental and physical health. That's why so many teachers suffer from depression--one of the highest rates of depression of any profession.

George Carlin said it was called the American Dream because you had to be asleep to believe in it. For 40 years now, productivity has been going up but wages haven't. That means all our productivity is generating wealth for a tiny number of people. These people are stealing the fruits of our labor. You can't change this with an election, not until you have a movement that demands better. I think we're finally seeing such a movement start. The Great Resignation is only the beginning.
