@ James Pier--most white folks want to believe that the cops are the good guys, that they're on "our side". Most have not awoken to the truth. The cops in Charlottesville stood by while a Nazi fired a gun at a black man and while other Nazis nearly beat a black man to death. There's the truth, for all to see, that it isn't just a few "bad eggs" but a systemic problem. Black folk don't need to be awakened to any of this: they've known all along.

I was nearly shot during a traffic stop by a cop here in California. The cop claimed I had pulled through a gas station to avoid a roadblock when in fact I had taken my car through the carwash (and had the receipt to prove it). I stayed calm even though the cop drew his weapon and screamed at me. He was BULGING with muscles and his forehead was swollen, clear signs of steroid use. I calmed down the roid-raged cop but I don't think things would've gone so calmly if I weren't a middle-aged white dude. I'm also used to dealing with tense situations so that helped a bit, too. I also wonder if the cop wasn't suffering PTSD. He had a Marine Corps tattoo on one forearm and was young, so he may have recently been in combat. The military is the opposite of the training you want for a peace officer, unless you want cops to be an occupying army in the United States. The military model is a recipe for abuse of civilians.
