Here's the chain of events: 1. Assad is beating the rebels and making inroads in European and American politics to retain his control of Syria; 2. Assad does exactly the thing that will ruin all of his progress (dropping chemical weapons on his own people). So either Assad is the world's stupidest man or the rebels did this.
