  1. I was a HS teacher for over 30 years before retiring. I had many boys who expressed an interest in a skilled trade (plumbing, auto mechanics, etc) but their parents steered them into a four-year university for two reasons: 1. It's more prestigious to say "my son is going to college" and 2. women don't want to date or marry a guy who doesn't have a college degree. My dad was a mechanic and eventually owned his own business. He retired a millionaire. The top men working for him earned $200,000 a year. High schools used to have "shop class" and those have been phased out in almost all schools. I do have some former students who went into "the trades" and one of them owns his own independent auto repair shop. He owns a 3000 square foot house with a four-car garage in Southern California (and married a Filipina woman because no American woman was interested). Our society has stigmatized working with your hands and the people who do this work, even though it's clear this kind of work is essential to keeping our society going.
