  1. No scientific research is a waste of time. We never know where our research will lead. Trappist system is unique so far in astronomy and deserves closer scrutiny.

  2. If it's true that all of the Trappist planets are tidally locked, that would argue strongly against the existence of life. A tidally locked planet is a bifurcated world. On one side it's always day; on the other, eternal night. One side would be boiling hot, the other side, icy cold.
