We introverts are so undervalued at work and only appreciated after we leave. Now that I'm retired from my job, people are realizing how much I did--but without drawing attention to myself. A big problem is that extroverts tend to get promoted to management and they promote and value their own personality type. I felt most valued when I was the only non-Asian person working with a staff of Vietnamese and Chinese people, who value and understand introversion.

I had a Chinese girlfriend who took me to a moon festival dinner. I was the only non-Chinese person there. I barely spoke a word the whole time and just let everyone else talk. I was enjoying myself, but in my own way. On the drive home, she said "I like how you are so quiet and modest, not trying to draw attention to yourself." I think I was supposed to be born Chinese.

America is a country run by game show hosts and used car salesmen. Not there's anything wrong with that. It's fine if that's who you are.
