Let's imagine my great-grandfather ran over someone else's great-grandfather while driving a horse and buggy. A knock on the door in 2023. It's the great-grandson of my great-grandfather's victim, demanding compensation. Does he hold any rights in a court of law? Of course not. No sane legal system would extend the statute of limitations across generations and force compensation from the descendant of a malefactor. Yet that is precisely what "slavery reparations" proposes: compensation for an injury that ceased to exist 158 years ago in the US. Using that legal precedent, can my mother reach back and make claim for reparations from the Danes who drove her Swedish grandparents off their land in the 1880s? After all, the injury is closer in time than the end of chattel slavery in 1865, and the direct descendants of those same Danes still possess the land. It makes just as much sense as this, if not more.

I have a colleague and friend whose parents are Japanese immigrants. FDR violated her parents' Constitutional rights by dispossessing them of their farm in northern California and interning them in a camp. It took decades, but the surviving immigrants (and their descendants) were finally compensated for this injury by the US government, and I supported it. I also support reparations for the Holocaust. But all of those were done within living memory; if no one who was injured is still living, then that ought to be the end of the matter. It's strange how silent black Americans are when asked about reparations for the most injured group of all, Native Americans who were almost wiped out by Europeans in one of history's greatest genocides. Nothing for the Native Americans, because there's so few of them that their votes don't really matter in an election. Black Americans are 13% of the population, so they can demand and receive reparations--in other words, this isn't about any redress of historical injustice, it's about buying votes for the Democratic Party from black Americans. "Remember me, Gavin Newsom? I got (or tried to get) $233,000 for each black person! And now I'm running for president!" Bribe people with your own money, Newsom, not mine.

@Sennaxm71 It's worked out so well in countries that carry over grudges and vendettas from one generation to the next, hasn't it? Ask the Sicilians about that.

@KemetledAfrica The Voting Rights Act, Civil Rights Act, and LBJ's Great Society with its expansion of social programs redressed all of those, directed at living people. Reparations are specifically cited for SLAVERY. If you want to expand out the argument, go for it--but why are you focusing on black Americans and not on Native Americans, who are by every measure the MOST disadvantaged group in the USA today? Because you're a race supremacist, that's why.

@acp2101 No need to call me sir, I haven't been knighted. My friends call me Daniel. You may call me Mr. Bradford. You're applying statute of limitations to people who are long since DEAD. Or are you going to round up everybody whose great-grandfather was a pickpocket and try them? You're an utter loon, but your type is apparently running the world now. (And most of the UK infrastructure was built by wage laborers, not slaves.)

It can be £100 billion or £100 trillion and it will never, ever be enough. The whole thing is madness, but it appears the whole of the ruling class (if you care to label them as such) is barking mad these days. They are all broken men and have forfeited their right to rule.

@acp2101 You are unfamiliar, sir, with the concept of a statute of limitations, so your scenario, even if accurate, would not change the fact that you have no case. Or should we dig into your family's past and if we find an unpunished murderer, haul you off to prison? After all, you wouldn't even exist if your ancestor hadn't escaped prosecution. Now go away.
