I have Iraqi neighbors who have children born in the US. The oldest son told me "I'm not an American, I'm Iraqi. Just because I was born here doesn't make me an American." I've heard the same sentiment expressed by the children of many Mexican and Central American immigrants (who I taught): "We're just here for the jobs, if it gets too bad here, we'll just go back home." Imagine being born in the US and thinking of another country as "home". I was born here and this is the only home I know. A member of my family has fought in every war since the War Between the States to defend our rights and sovereignty. I have a nephew in the military right now. We bled for this country because it was our home, and you fight for your home and for your people. Earlier generations of immigrants (including those of my parents) wanted so badly to be accepted as "real Americans"; the new people feel no loyalty to the USA, only to their own ethnic group and/or their parents' country of origin. We have a number of dual Israeli-American citizens in Congress who openly boast about putting Israel first, before the US. And so it goes. Why should I or my family defend this country for the likes of them? I don't see the point, do you?
