I agree about lack of work ethic, most of my young neighbors have no job and no desire to hold one, yet somehow manage to have loads of cash (they do make a lot of trips late at night, so speculate on what that entails if you will). I'm sixty and retired; it took my employer eight months after my last day of work to find a qualified replacement for me, even though I gave them six months notice. The replacement is a young woman who is struggling so much in the position that she contacted me for advice. She was apparently hired because she's a woman and from an ethnic minority, but lacks any relevant experience and only has the minimum qualifications. I did help her as much as I could, on my own time, but I can't do the job for her. She asked me how many hours I worked every week and I told her between fifty and sixty, which is when she stopped contacting me, because she doesn't want to work more than thirty-five hours weekly. Nigellus, I doubt either of us will live long enough to see things turned around, but we will live long enough to see things get worse and worse.

@kalemdor1667 I have neighbors who run in and out of the house all day, down to the local park, then back again, sometimes 30-40 trips a day. I honestly didn't notice until my sister, a former police officer, visited and remarked on it. I checked my security cameras and the same cars were making these very short trips (the nearest park is five minutes away by car). A large number of police raided some of those houses a couple of months ago, and the trips stopped, but have since resumed. My sister advised me to stay well away from those neighbors. One of them did threaten me when I walked down to that end of the street and told me to stay away. Nothing suspicious going on there at all.

Big Tech companies are laying off thousands of workers (Facebook, Twitter, Salesforce, et al) but are still importing computer programmers from India on HB1 visas. The Indians ask no questions, will not unionize, and work for far cheaper than their American counterparts. The HB1 visa's purpose is to import workers whose skills are in short supply, but there are now thousands of jobless, experienced American programmers. No work for them! Have a look at the top executives of most "American" Big Tech and Big Pharma firms and you'll see they're Indians. As for illegal immigrants from Central America, our own Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, said they were needed to pick crops and to work as domestic help. She should know: she owns a vineyard in California and several mansions, all of which must be kept sparkling clean, and at the lowest wages possible.

@kenstevens5065 In Los Angeles, the "Russian barber shop" is quite popular. No customers and staffed by some very tough-looking men who never actually cut hair.

@tancreddehauteville764 What's more incredible is that the food doesn't cost any more there than it does in the US or UK. Almost as if McDonald's has a big enough profit margin to pay its workers more, but chooses not to do so.

Employers have tried everything to attract workers. Except raising wages. That's crazy talk.

I found out that hard work is its own punishment. I worked 50-60 hour weeks my entire life. Got nothing for it. That's why I don't really blame young people for not wanting to work a proper job. What's the point?

@pussypostlethwaitsaeronaut8503 I'm an American, it's "neighbors", "color", and the "ch" in "schedule" is a hard k sound. The American version of English is the global standard.

@jamesmorris3123 China, to take one prominent example, prefers American English over British English. Among the roughly 350 million native English speakers, the American version is spoken by about 70 percent.

@jamesmorris3123 British lost their empire because they were bankrupt after World War Two, period. You"gave it back" to avoid having it taken from you by force. No worries, you're our favorite colony, we'll make sure you're taken care of.
