I took a black male friend home with me to Kansas, which is a mostly rural state (aka "the countryside") and he was worried about being targeted. It was racist stereotyping on his part, because everyone was very friendly and kind to him, whether or not I accompanied him. He admitted on the flight back to California that he was surprised that the people in "rural" and "redneck" Kansas were much nicer than the people in "liberal" Los Angeles. Black people or any non-white people who are afraid of rural areas are displaying their own prejudices. I've encountered these stereotypes throughout my life, as soon as someone in a big city discovers I'm from Kansas. I don't fit their stereotype of what someone from Kansas acts or looks like; in fact, few Kansans do. That's because racist stereotypes of white people persist decade after decade because no white people dare challenge them. Fun facts: Kansas was the battleground for the precursor to the War Between the States, as Kansans fought be admitted as a free state to the Union. This is the period known as "Bleeding Kansas" and was a war in which the state capitals of Kansas was burned to the ground were burnt to the ground by pro-slavery forces no fewer than three times (we kept moving the capital and they kept burning it--our insurance rates went sky-high). Nicodemus, Kansas, a town founded by freed black slaves granted land in Kansas after the war, still exists.
