The American black population is doing better than those in the UK, relatively speaking: 14.2% of the population and 54.4% of the murder victims. In 90% of the cases of black murder victims, their assailant was also black. Still, these statistics are dire and getting worse by the year. Violent crime rates are steadily rising in the US and most of the increase has been in majority black cities and neighborhoods. The cause? There are studies that suggest that pro-violence race rhetoric may lead to racial violence. If race rhetoric is, in fact, playing a role, it’s possible that what we’re seeing today we have seen before. The increase in black offenders and black victims is reminiscent of the fallout from the Black Power movements of the 1960s, which unleashed a black-on-black crime wave in the 1970s and 1980s.
