In the US, my black colleagues have said they despise camping and outdoors trekking. "I'm not spending my vacation out in some nasty woods with bugs and mud and God knows what kind of animals waiting to eat me," one black woman (who shared an office with me whenI taught at university) explained to me. "My husband and I go to all-inclusive resorts and spas, especially by the beach, or on an ocean cruise." She showed me photos of some of those vacations and it looked as if she and her husband enjoyed themselves very much. There are many white people who feel the same about the outdoors: best seen on a Youtube video. It's nothing to do with racism: it's just a preference certain people have. I've been to Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks--two of the world's great natural treasures--and the few black people there were never once made to feel unwelcome as far as I could see. Vacationing outdoors is like mayonnaise: it's mostly a white thing, not because we bully others out of it, but simply because different people have different ideas of enjoying themselves. The only black folk I know who enjoy camping and so forth are military veterans who had those experiences in the service, and/or those who were raised in the country. I don't see why we can't just be left in peace to like what we like.

@CG I went hiking a few times with my friend Art when we both lived in the same area (we were both in the US Air Force together and have known each other almost forty years). We were both raised on farms and don't like big cities. We also went to university together after getting out of the service (we went into the military to get that free ride). We feel very comfortable outdoors. Art is black and never once said he was uncomfortable being around so many white people--he was the only black guy in our unit (intelligence) in the USAF and had no problems there, either. Most people, of whatever color, aren't looking to make more problems in their lives. As Simon says, it's white ladies at universities who want to stir things up all the time for some reason.

If liberal white ladies don't have any problems, they will create them.
