Sure, there were black and brown people in Europe but they weren't that common, and there were two reasons. Othello by William Shakespeare: Othello is a Moor, which is a person of Arab and Berber descent. As students of history will recall, on 10 October 732 Frankish General Charles Martel crushed an invading Muslim army at Tours in France, decisively halting the Islamic advance into Europe. That's reason #1. Reason #2: The Reconquista, in which Christian rulers drove Muslims out of the south of Spain, culminating in the Expulsion of the Moriscos by King Philip III of Spain between1609-1614. As for the Viking era civilizations in northern Europe, a person with black or brown skin would have been a quite remarkable sight. All of the slaves taken by the Viking raiders were as fair-skinned as themselves.
