  1. I was hooked on Firefly from this scene in the first episode: A criminal named Crow threatens Captain Mal and his crew. Mal just shrugs, says "darn" and kicks the handcuffed Crow into a turbine engine that shreds him. No monologue, no elaborate death scenario, no "let's let the bad guy go so he can make us pay for being merciful in a future episode" stuff. Exactly what a battle-hardened man would do: destroy an enemy who wants to kill him. One less opponent to worry about.
