  1. I worked with a woman who used to be a "reader" for a major film studio, meaning her job was to read and critique scripts people had submitted from all corners of the world. The readers came from many backgrounds, many were published authors themselves, almost all of them over thirty-five. Then some very rich executive realized he could upgrade his yacht if he fired the professional "readers" and farmed the job out to unpaid interns enrolled in film school, i.e, all people under the age of 25. And of course no one can live as an unpaid intern in Los Angeles unless they have support from the Bank of Rich Daddy and Mommy. You have people who've gone from pampered backgrounds to college to film school without having ever LIVED a real, warts-and-all life. So of course they don't know what they're doing. Very few people do when they're twenty-one or twenty-two. And these unpaid wet-behind-the-ears interns have a very real say in what films get made.

  2. Same thing happens on Booktube, aka Youtube book reviewers, and in Goodreads. There's a very popular SFF reviewer on Youtube who is CLEARLY on the payroll of several well-known authors and does over-the-top fan boy shilling for them.
