  1. It's often been written that the first world war, known more properly as the Great War, was the end of Western civilization. Most European societies never really recovered from it. The best young men were sent to slaughter one another for the possession of muddy patches of ground no one really wanted. Looking back, how could they not see that it was madness and futility? But now we do the same, having learned nothing.
