She could also read her State Department and DNI briefing papers and also read books on history and foreign policy.   13. We had a student (high school) who tried to stab another girl in a hallway fight. One of my colleagues intervened and the girl stabbed him in the thigh. The girl tried to stab two police officers who showed up to arrest her but they disarmed her. The girl was suspended for the rest of the year and her mother sued the district, claiming they were denying the girl her right to an education. The district had to pay hundreds of thousands in a settlement and the girl was allowed to return to campus. Meanwhile, my colleague walks with a permanent limp. That's an extreme example but it reveals the mindset of most parents now: NO ONE disciplines their kids, not them, not teachers, no one.

I feel like we aren't being told the truth about Mr. Neely's actions that day, because three people thought it was reasonable to restrain him on the subway. Three people. Why did they do that? The city government of New York, including DA Alvin Bragg, have helped create an atmosphere in which vigilantism was bound to occur--and now it has. But no government official will ever take responsibility for creating this environment. Mr. Neely was arrested forty times and had an outstanding warrant for assaulting a 67 year old woman; why was he roaming the streets and not confined to a mental hospital or jail?

We went from being able to call home and get parental support for misbehaving teens to being physically attacked on campus by the parents because we disciplined their kids. Everyone forgets that rights come with responsibilities. This is how these young people were raised: no respect for anyone. Thirty years, and I was never in any physical danger as a teacher until the last five years.
