I'm a retired college professor. Faculty and students who do this were a minority on our campus--only 10% or so--but they have effectively intimidated the college administrators and the faculty. What's lacking is the courage to stand up to the mob. College administrators are politicians rather than stewards of the public trust.

I'm a retired college professor. Colleges have lost their values of free speech and actually enforce a rigid dogma now. I'm not overtly political nor controversial, but I was constantly scrutinized for even a "microaggression", which could be something as simple as asking a student to put his/her cellphone away during class time. I was explicitly told that I was being more closely scrutinized because I was "an old white man", even though my personality is "Mr. Rogers' nicer brother" (I did get a perfect rating from my very racially diverse group of students, so I must've been doing something right.). It is NOT most students nor even most college faculty: as always, it's a very vocal minority who are threatened by anyone who varies in any way from how they think someone else should think, speak, or act. I'm saddened to see it's come to this: college is supposed to be the place where you open your mind to new ideas and instead it's become a place where young people close their minds. I became a teacher to challenge students to think for themselves, not to tell them what to think. This atmosphere of intimidation isn't just bad for people like Mr. West or Ms. Purcell, it's bad for the people who threatened them (because they forfeit an opportunity to have learned something) and for all of the bystanders (faculty and students) who will now be afraid to speak their minds for fear of retaliation. The worst kind of censorship is self-censorship.

@listenherejack2643 I worked for a publicly funded university. They are a government entity. Private institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, et al, are not.

@Schtuperfly Even those of us who don't agree with this abhorrent stifling of free speech?
