There are worse things than being laid off. I've been laid off once from a teaching job, by an idiot superintendent who mismanaged the district's budget. It turned out that I found a better job in an area where I could afford a house, which I later resold for a good profit. Being laid off turned into a very good thing for me because it motivated me to seek new opportunities. After the 2008 crash, I did NOT get laid off, but 25% of the teaching staff in our district did. But we had the same number of administrators (of course--none of them got laid off) and students, so those of us who remained had to accept not only a pay cut, but a greatly increased workload. Morale was lower than a snake's belly. And the district never really rehired the full staff after that; companies as well as government agencies that lay people off rarely restore all of the jobs even when the economy improves.
