I taught for thirty years and I agree with your approach. We're supposed to work in partnership with parents, which is what you did.

I worked in a school where school board members did that to intimidate teachers who were giving the kids of relatives/friends/supporters of the school member low grades, etc. I had no problem with administrators dropping in unannounced, because at no time was I ever doing anything improper. Teachers who don't want unannounced visits by their principal are likely up to no good.

I was a teacher for thirty years and I don't see the problem with the Parents Bill of Rights. Schools funded by taxpayers have a duty to be transparent and accountable. If parents object to something in the curriculum or a book in the school library, then it's time to have a conversation about that. Some things are non-negotiable: if a parent said "I don't want my child to learn about the Holocaust", for example, then I'd tell them that's a historical fact and students are there to learn facts. I rather suspect the people freaking out about this want teachers to be free to use their classrooms as their combination therapy space/activist platform, which is not what public classrooms are for. I can't think of another explanation.
