  1. Thomas Frank and I are the same age and are both Kansans born and bred. But our lives have been very different: my family are the "deplorable" class, not Frank's respectable upper middle class folks, and I never admired Ronald Reagan: I always thought he was a jerk. None of my family, all of them Republicans, had anything except contempt for Reagan. We all looked up to Bob Dole, who is a sensible man.
