Meanwhile, back to the reality of the other 90% of us--the 9.1% inflation number (which is really 17.1% CPI when you take into account ALL goods and services) was higher than predicted, and this "transitory" inflation that was going to last a quarter or two has gone on for more than a year, with no end in sight. We're already in recession and massive joblessness and defaults on mortgages and auto loans are going to spike, perhaps at a high not seen since the Great Depression. The top 10% won't be affected by any of this. In fact, all this pain for the rest of us is just a whole new set of opportunities for them.

There are two types of people: those who live in denial of how bad things are or might be (90% of the population) and people who are considered pessimists who accurately perceive how bad things are or might be (10% of the population). I find that most people's predictions of outcomes are always much more optimistic than anything supported by reality. This is why people keep getting married, for example, despite the high failure rate.

  21. If you follow John Williams' ShadowStats newsletter, he calculates that inflation is over 15% and is at its highest level since 1947. We've had inflation (money supply higher than the CPI) since 2008, which has been propping up the US economy. This didn't cause an increase in the CPI because demand was so suppressed for a decade. Take away the money supply inflation and we are going to go into a deflationary period, which is rare in rich countries. The only sustained deflationary periods in the past 100 years were the Great Depression of 1929-1939 and the Japanese economy in the 1990s.

What Burry said: Fed will be pressured to pivot, lower rates again to turn on the free money spigot for Wall Street, and inflation will then spike back into the double digits and the rest of the decade will be a long, hard fight against a ruinous rate of inflation--in other words, a "lost decade". Oh well, rich people can't be expected to be without their free money, right? Sucks for the rest of us, though.

Here's the breakdown: 2020-2022: Banks invested deposits into long-term treasury securities that until recently were paying very low interest rates. 2023: Interest rates on short-term securities now exceed the interest on the long-term securities by a wide margin. This greatly decreases the value of the securities held by the banks. 2023: Depositors are withdrawing funds to invest in short-term securities. The banks don't have the assets to cover these deposits. SVB is the second largest bank failure in US history. It collapsed in less than 48 hours. And Summers wants us to believe that other banks aren't going to fail? Do other banks have the same problem as SVB, i.e., holding long-term investments that are now worth a fraction of what they were just a couple of years ago? Yes, they do. Let's say you have $100 that you owe to someone. And suddenly that $100 becomes worth $20. Now your creditor is demanding his $100 and you don't have it. And he starts telling everyone you're a deadbeat because you can't repay what you owe. Everyone starts to panic. We're all in a lot of trouble. Well, not rich people--our government will rush to bail them out. But the rest of us are unbelievably screwed.

If you don't have a minimum income of $200,000, you don't count to these "business programs" on tv, nor to the economists, nor to the politicians. In fact, you don't count, period. This program reflects THEIR reality, not ours, and in THEIR reality, things aren't so bad. In fact, they're pretty damned good.

  33. Every US bank is badly managed. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best, I'd give the BEST one a 6. And most are at 3 or 4. Banks are propped up by corporate socialism. We saw that in 2008 and you're about to see it again. A criminal corporation poisoned an entire town in Ohio. No help for them. The Chinese curse is "May you get your heart's desire", because a return to super low interest rates will just create more asset bubbles, exacerbate already painful inequality, and ultimately spark hyperinflation.   48. I bought three houses in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Perfect credit score, 20% down, never less than 8% interest on a 30 year mortgage. We've gotten so addicted to free money that we forget that this is NOT normal--8% interest on a 30 year mortgage is NORMAL and that's where the Fed should try to keep it. Keeping mortgage rates at 2% or 3% is NOT sustainable long-term and we're now seeing that plain as day.
