I've never lived in NYC but I lived and worked in the SF Bay area for 20 years, including working in Chinatown. Both SF and NYC are in death spirals: homelessness and crime get out of control, and then businesses start to flee, pulling up the anchors that give a city stability. Death spirals are nearly impossible to arrest. I don't see a way out of this for either city.

@Jason-eu5zx I have a much higher quality of life and far more freedom since I left San Francisco. The arrogance and snobbery of your remark presumes that only these "magical" cities have "value". What value is that, exactly? Stepping over human feces, looking over your shoulder all the time to see if someone's about to attack you, paying sky-high rents to live in a tiny apartment in a noisy, crime-ridden part of town? Macy's has just left downtown San Francisco--not even the Great Depression shut them down, but the current woes did. Pull your head out of wherever you have it stuck.

@pgroove163 True. That's why I lived in Chinatown in Oakland and worked in Chinatown in San Francisco.

@andreamckenzie8598 It's not inevitable, it's the result of policy choices by idiot voters and the dimwitted politicians they elect. I lived in the SF area for twenty years, and it wasn't always like this. Voters and politicians decided to go easy on criminals and the rest, well, it WAS inevitable.
