  2. I taught Hispanic students in Southern California who were in gangs that their grandfathers founded. Of course, their grandfathers were barely fifty, but that still counts. Every year, some boys would miss a couple of weeks of school, because they wanted to heal up the bruises and cuts from their gang initiation.

  3. The police can't do much in a society that lacks nuclear families and economic and social stability. It's we, the people, who keep the peace and the police can only deal with anomalies. When criminal behavior becomes the norm, the police are next to powerless.
