I taught in Palm Springs, California and we spent all day managing student "behavioral issues", little to no time to teach. The kids are so out of control that many schools have become holding pens. It was exhausting and I was physically and mentally spent by the end of the year. Most of the faculty were badly burnt out. I was the victim of eight attempted assaults by parents who were upset by discipline referrals for their kids--one father of one of my students showed up at the school with five of his brothers, all of them armed with baseball bats. They marched to my classroom--but I was at a conference that day, or else I'd have caught a beating. It was a rare thing at that school for a kid to NOT be in a gang. How can you teach in that environment? You can't.

I was a public school teacher for thirty years, retired in 2021. The parents used to be our allies. Now, they're our enemies. Both sides are at fault in that. I always taught in California schools, so we always had a ethnically diverse student body. In the early 1990s, I taught at school that was 50% Hispanic, 40% Asian, 10% white. A Hispanic teacher said our standards were racist because Hispanic students didn't test as well as our Asian students. The white, male head of the math department pushed back, saying "Maybe their parents should make them come to school every day and do their homework if they're so worried." Now, that same statement would get him investigated, publicly shamed, suspended, perhaps even fired. Now, no one dares push back against the "objective standards are racist" lie. Congratulations, woke activists both inside and outside the school: you won! How does it feel, champ?
