Culture matters. The criminal justice system is trying to fix social problems and it's not designed to do that. What these kids need: strong moral guidance and discipline from a mother and a father. Most of them are fatherless and their mothers either don't have a moral compass or else are too weak to govern these boys as they grow into teens and then into men. There's an old John Singleton film, "Boyz in the Hood", that addresses this issue honestly: REVA (Tre's mother, speaking to Tre's father, Furious Styles): "Hey, it's like you told me. I can't teach him to be a man. That's your job." And Denzel Washington said it another way: "If the father is not in the home, the boy will find a father in the streets. I saw it in my generation and every generation before me and every one since. If the streets raise you, then the judge becomes your mother and prison becomes your home.” Let's start with revoking laws and social programs that kick men out of the home and instead pass laws and programs encouraging them to stay with their children and the mothers of their children. It's not a silver bullet solution, but it's a start.
