Combat units will be issued 6.8x51 M5s and M250s. There's a contract for conversion kits for M240s to use 6.8. They're going single caliber in those units, let's see how it pans out.

@kevinfitzpatrick5949 armor tech at this point is cheap enough that while large armies may not be able to field it, insurgencies and rogue states can import it from China

Because the focus was firepower at the fireteam level while the conventional wisdom was machine gun at the squad level. Rifle platoon still got a weapons squad with two MG teams to give them medium machine gun capabilities. When this was decided it made a lot more sense. The 5.56 belt fed was technically not a "belt fed MG" but a "belt fed automatic weapon" and the user was an automatic rifleman, not a machine gunner.

Stop being a schizo. By that logic the air force is also developing the NGAD air superiority fighter... to shoot down civilian Cessnas? "Hurr durr the wars from the past ended so there's no point in developing anything" by that logic we should still be using coal and steam power. Why try new things?

It was a SOCOM program to replace the M60. It "makes sense" to scrap M240s and just use Mk 48s but things are not that simple. It's like a company, all the servers run Linux and people at the office use Windows. You ask why not change to Linux in the office, it's because they need to use software not available on Linux. The fact of the matter is that you'd need to have a program to replace M240s and you can't just say the Mk 48 autonatically wins because it "makes sense". It might actually not. There's M240 based weapons like the coaxial on the M1 Abrams and it's the vehicle mounted MG on a ton of them. The receivers have double the life of the Mk 48.

@shapshooter7769 Even if you could get a contract just to replace infantry MGs, it would have to be open to any manufacturer who wished to compete. Someone else could win the bid with a new machine gun and the Mk. 48 lose.

When you're on the receiving end, the bullets impacting near you suppress you a lot more than the faint pops from hundreds of yards away.
