The individual can exist, there have been people who survived on their own for many years. The collective allows for specialization and division of labour which makes survival easier, but it's still a collection of individuals.

Because their breach of contract would signal the market they are unreliable. There's this legend in my country, the Romans couldn't conquer Lusitania because of a great warrior king called Viriato. Since they could not win, they put a bounty on his head, people close to Viriato murdered him in his sleep. When they met the Romans to collect their prize, the Romans said "we don't deal with traitors". I'm paraphrasing and it's only a legend but it's got a good message.

+Owlblocks David the NAP would entitle you to resist aggression, go after the aggressor and demand reparations, etc. If there's dictators in the Middle East it's not society's responsibility to go there. If you want to be a good Samaritan and help the victims by going there yourself you'd be entitled to defend others under the NAP but you cannot use the NAP to demand everyone to pay for your expedition.

+FreemanicParacusia the US has been at war for 222 out of it's 239 years of existence. And yet you claim that a private military would lead to perpetual war as if we don't have that already.

+LMA which is why libertarians are consistently anti-taxation and anti-government expenditure.

+BLITZMASCHINE >government by divine right of kings >most private armies belonged to noblemen which were appointed by the aristocracy anyway I don't see the libertarianism in medieval europe... If you want a libertarian utopia during that time look no further than the republic of Cospaia, which as an experiment it went much better than you'd think and lasted for almost 400 years.

+Dirty Wise if one company proves itself to be unreliable who has the incentive to hire them?

The F-35 is an amazing aircraft - any warplane these days is a congressional con job designed to create employment in various states so that congressmen can get reelected, raising prices.

222 out of 239 years at war, the US has been. You're scared of perpetual war ignoring that the state already made that nightmare a reality.

All I'm saying is, the more it costs to make the better it is for everyone involved except the taxpayer. Lockheed Martin gets paid and politicians get reelected at our expense. The F-16 is an excellent fighter that claimed it's fame for being an excellent jack of all trades. It's affordable to many countries which can field F-16s and use them to defend their airspace and for bombing without having to acquire dedicated ground attack aircraft. Nobody complains about it being a jack of all trades. It will absolutely do anything the F-16 does, it's pretty much a F-16 on steroids. And considering that the F-16 is a better CAS plane than the A-10 itself... Does not do anything better than currently existent aircraft? Then how come the F-35 absolutely wipes the floor with the F-15 and F-16 in the Red Flag exercises? How come is it able to do the Harrier's job better than the Harrier itself and without suffering any losses?

Mercenaries are voluntary, they sign a contract and may breach it if they want out.

Destruction and looting? The US government did the atomic bombing and Agent Orange, among other things. A lot of armies have used plunder as a legitimate tactic. You're acting like people never switched allegiance. "Honor"? A lot of people only joined for the pay or free college. You're acting like logistical nightmares aren't a thing with government armies, look at WWII Germany - the mythical Germany war machine was plagued with logistical problems. The US government also does the same with cheaper equipment, they developed the shitty USGI aluminium magazines and soldiers were bringing the superior Magpul magazines and the armed forces wouldn't let them use them. However soldiers didn't care because those were the best possible magazines for their rifles and they have been in service unofficially. The Marines adopted magpuls in 2013 while the Army stubbornly sticks to it's guns and has wasted money developing a new follower for the USGI aluminium mags that is compatible with the M855A1 round. The Soviet Union committed mass rapes and attempted genocide across Eastern Europe, how could anyone be worse than them?

+Damion jackson you'd be surprised at how many libertarians reject the constitution.

Remember when John McCain was voted out? Check the balance of private war mongers? Stop paying them. Privatizing war means that the private military corporations have to replenish their equipment and men out of their own pocket rather than stealing more from the taxpayer and forcing drafts. The biggest profits to be made are if you get paid to protect, but nobody attacks. You get money, but don't lose any men or equipment. You enter a war, you send all your money down the drain.
