The US is also fighting a War on Drugs. Street prices of many drugs in the US seem to be in average higher than in Europe because of prohibition. Remember when Prohibition 1.0 failed and created a profit in organized crime? Prohibition 2.0's effects are still being felt. It has the highest incarceration rate - there's people out there who won't ever get a decent job and won't be able to leave the life of crime. Modern US is also not comparable to the "Wild West". Sorry, but the US is a complete outlier in terms of "developed" countries. Even people in high-tax bureaucratic socialist-influenced states such as Sweden are rated to have more economic freedom than the people from the US.
