  5. On economics, it's Yeltsin that deserves the blame. He wouldn't enforce the required reforms to align the economy which allowed Soviet-era politicians to continue to apply their antiquated policies and going money printer go BRRRR as a way to solve their problems. And most importantly, he sold off nationalized industry for peanuts in a fraudulent privatization scheme.

Poverty, a byproduct of the Soviet times. The poverty was coming. All Gorbachev did was try to steer a ship that was sinking. And Yeltsin inflicted far more damage for the benefit of the elites. Yeltsin put a bomb in the cargo hold and let the water flood in even more.
