  1. It's important to remember that the defecting pilot had a crew inside the helicopter and when they discovered about the defection they tried to resist so the pilot had no choice and shot them. The pilot didn't just defect, he had to kill 2 or 3 of his comrades to survive. So the Russians were veeeeeery pissed off.
