@djwaffle The WNBA just draws less viewers and sponsors. Countries like Russia have a "prestige" and money laundering opportunity so they don't focus so much on profitability. A female league sponsored by local governments and oligarchs can recruit top players, offer much higher salaries, then just have those teams collect trophies. They make the main money off oil and gas so the sports thing is a side hustle they can afford to lose money on or use betting to launder money. A similar thing was seen in Chinese soccer, where western players would compete in China for a few years for the paycheck. And now you see the Middle East getting in on the action.

@connectine Completely decontextualized. "Stay woke" is much more recent as it dates to the 20th century and it was brought back as both a legitimate slogan and as a meme. In the early 2010s you'd see tumblr posts and twitter screencaps of parodies of conspiracies punctuated by "stay woke my brothers".

reform-revolution It's not used for the same reason, awakening is a very generalist metaphor. For example the Anbar Awakening during the Iraqi war. Were Iraqis "woke" for halting the warlord infighting and focusing on helping the United States root out the insurgency?

Remember when Elon Musk was asked about the low number of immigrants in SpaceX and his response was that they do defense contracts, which means having to get security clearences for foreigners to make sure they're not spying on the US military? Woke isn't "not hating minorities". It's when you need to perfomatively "not hate minorities" so hard you throw your brain out the window and imply xenophobia out of ignorance on a subject.
