Back then people had more pronounced "base martial arts". Nowadays you can sign up for MMA gyms where you train basically kickboxing with some Muay Thai, and no Gi BJJ with some wrestling. It's a true hybrid art. Back then most people had a base art and a secondary skill. Lyoto Machida throws straight punches more like karate than boxing, but he uses hooks which sort of makes it look like he's kickboxing. EDIT: it's also worth mentioning that karate has knees, there's footage of 80s and 90s karate tournaments - bareknuckle, no headgear - and people get dropped with knees from the clinch.

The guy in the suit was a pro-wrestler as well. Would explain the antics.

He throws straight punches like a karateka rather than an orthodox boxer. The switching stance blitz is an unorthodox technique and the vast majority of boxing coaches advise against it.
